Journalists in Indonesia is not safe and need serious attention from stakeholders. Every year some journalists had experience violence. Last year, AJI had recorded at least 43 violence against journalists cases while they were working in the field. The most recent case of physical violence happened to a journalist for Tempo magazine in Surabaya, Nurhadi, while the most prominent digital violence against journalists occurred at the end of September 2022.
Such violence cannot be justified for any reason. However, sometimes the lack of knowledge of journalists and the lack of company protection contribute to the occurrence of violence.
Reflecting on the problems above, AJI developed the Media and Journalist Safety Index in Indonesia to support advocacy and long-term campaigns for the safety and security of media workers. The report was titled the Journalist Safety Index 2022.
