Indonesian Press Freedom Situation Report 2024

Despite hopes for reform, the state of press freedom in Indonesia only worsened in 2024. As this report outlines, the shift in power did little to ease the pressure on journalists. Instead, it marked a descent out of the tiger’s mouth, into the crocodile’s jaws.

The report focuses on three key areas:

  1. Violence and Attacks on Press Freedom
Journalists continued to face physical violence, digital harassment, and legal threats, often with little or no accountability.

  2. Wave of Layoffs Hits Indonesian Media Industry
Economic pressures and political interference triggered mass layoffs across newsrooms, often in violation of labor laws. Union busting and government indifference further undermined journalists' rights and job security.

  3. Ethical Violations and Fading Firewalls: A Warning Sign for Indonesia’s Press Freedom
Editorial independence is under threat, as political and financial pressures blur the lines between journalism and propaganda. Government-sponsored content is frequently disguised as news, and media outlets face pressure to withdraw critical reporting.

This report is both a reflection and a call to action for journalists, civil society, and the public to stand together in defending press freedom and the future of democracy in Indonesia.
