Policy Paper: Legal and Policy Analysis Following The Constitutional Court’s Ruling on The Electronic Information and Transactions Law

On April 29, 2025, the Constitutional Court of Indonesia annulled vague and problematic articles in the Electronic Information and Transactions (ITE) Law, specifically those on defamation and the dissemination of false information, which have long been misused to silence criticism.

The ruling offers a glimmer of hope for press freedom and freedom of expression in Indonesia. But how will it play out in practice? Will it truly end the criminalization of journalists and expand democratic space online?

In response, AJI Indonesia has developed a policy paper to reflect on the implications of this ruling and propose concrete steps to strengthen democracy and media freedom moving forward.
